Overview of the Good Neighbours / Great Neighbourhoods Program
The Good Neighbours / Great Neighbourhoods program consists of two major parts:
- Good Neighbours will give people an opportunity to recognize others on their street who are doing good deeds and enhancing the quality of life in the neighbourhood.
These can be deeds large or small, such as shoveling a seniors’ walk in winter, or organizing after-school activities for neighbourhood children.
- Great Neighbourhoods is a designation process to recognize neighbourhoods with citizens actively engaged in making their street or block safe, friendly and green, as well as a place of pride. Neighbourhoods can apply to be designated for a term of one-year, renewable each year if the neighbourhood continues to meet the criteria.
Brampton neighbourhoods will be designated if the area residents can demonstrate they are engaged in planning activities that support a friendly, safe, green and caring environment.
They must maintain an active planning group of at least five neighbours, and hold a minimum of three activities or events each year.
Examples include:
- Organizing a block party or street bbq where neighbours get to know one another (friendly)
- Holding a Neighbourhood Watch meeting or a safety workshop (safe)
- Organizing a spring clean-up (green)
- Planning activities that reach out to help children, seniors or other vulnerable people living in their neighbourhood (helping others)
